Makalu (8,481 m) straddles the Nepal-China border between Everest and Kanchenjunga. Our adventure to the foot of this mighty mountain begins with a flight to the trailhead at Tumlingtar which lies on a major trade route of Nepal and China and porters carrying goods are frequently encountered on the mountain paths. We walk to Manebhanjyang via Khandbari and then cross the Arun river to climb over rocky terrain to Sedwa. From Sedwa, the trail crosses meadows and streams to the Sherpa village of Tashi Gaon which is surrounded by barley and potato fields. Then it's a steep ascent to Kawma and on to Mumbuk over the Shipton-la pass with terrific views of Makalu Chamlang and other peaks. We keep on walking following the Barun river upstream to Naya Kharka and Sherson to the end of our trek at Makalu Base Camp. The trek takes us through a remote and unfrequented part of Nepal. We follow the same trail to return to Tumlingtar from where we fly back to Kathmandu.
